Douglas Laboratories’ Borage Seed Oil softgels are manufactured using only 100% vegetable oil from borage seeds (Borago officinalis The oil is cold-processed and handled carefully to avoid any oxidation, as indicated by consistently low peroxide values. No solvents such as hexane are used during the extraction and processing.
FUNCTIONS
Typical diets in developed countries deliver large amounts of saturated fatty acids and the polyunsaturated omega-6 linoleic and arachidonic acids. Dietary linoleic acid (18:2 omega-6) is a precursor to arachidonic acid (20:4) which in turn is a precursor for pro-inflammatory immune mediators, the 2-series prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes. Flax seed oil is nature’s most concentrated source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. Douglas Laboratories’ Flax Seed Oil provides 55-60% ALA, as well as significant amounts of oleic acid and the essential linoleic acid in their natural triglyceride forms. Flax Seed Oil is extracted without the damaging effects of heat, light, and oxygen using a mechanical expeller press. Using this process, the oil never is exposed to temperatures above 96o F, and it retains its natural color and contents of naturally occurring fatty acids, phosphatides, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Flax Seed Oil is available as a liquid or in softgel form.
FUNCTIONS

FUNCTIONS
Lecithin is a phospholipid composed of phosphatidyl esters (phosphatides), mainly consisting of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylinositol. Soybean lecithin typically contains around 24% phosphatidylcholine, 22% phosphatidylethanolamine, and 19% phosphatidylinositol. Lecithin also contains fatty acids, which are primarily omega-6 fatty acids and a small amount of omega-3 fatty acids.Phospholipids are the major component in the membranes of the brain. Membranes are the working surfaces of every cell, carrying out the essential functions of cellular communication and hormonal signal transduction. Nerve cells, in particular, depend on healthy membrane function for normal neurotransmitter metabolism and nerve signal transmission. Choline, as a component of phosphatidylcholine, is used for synthesis and maintenance of normal cell membranes. Taking lecithin orally may increase serum choline, a precursor to the acetylcholine which supports memory.
In addition, lecithin can play a key role in the emulsification and mobilization of fats and cholesterol. Lecithin has Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status in the US.

FUNCTIONS
Vitamin E is one of the body’s most important antioxidant nutrients. Antioxidants protect healthy cells from oxidative and free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable chemicals formed in the body during metabolism and from exposure to environmental sources, such as pollution and cigarette smoke. Free radicals are necessary for energy metabolism and immune function, but when an excessive number of free radicals are formed, they can attack healthy cells, especially cell membrane lipids and proteins. This, in turn, is thought to contribute to a number of degenerative diseases.
Vitamin E is an especially valuable antioxidant in the cell membranes, where it prevents oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids by trapping free radicals. This helps stabilize and protect cell membranes, especially red blood cells and tissues sensitive to oxidation, such as the lungs, eyes, and arteries.
Selenium is a nutritionally essential trace element for humans and animals. The National Research Council’s Recommended Dietary Allowance for selenium in adults ranges from 55 to 75 mcg per day depending on age and gender.
Selenium is a cofactor to about 10 selenoproteins in the body; the most important of these appears to be glutathione peroxidase (GPX). GPX uses glutathione to reduce hydrogen peroxide and thus protect cells and plasma against free radical injury. GPX activity depends on an adequate supply of dietary selenium. Recently, selenium as selenocysteine has been identified in the active center of type 1 and 3 iodothyronine deiodinases, two important enzymes regulating the formation and degradation of the active thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine (T3). Another important selenoprotein appears to be selenoprotein P, but its functions remain unclear. Selenium and vitamin E appear to have synergistic effects, since some signs of vitamin E deficiency in animals can be alleviated by dietary selenium.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has numerous biological functions. Foremost, it is essential for the synthesis of collagen and glycosaminoglycans which are the building materials of all connective tissues, such as skin, blood vessels, tendons, joint cartilage and bone. Vitamin C participates in the biosynthesis of carnitine, serotonin, and certain neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine. Vitamin C is among the most powerful antioxidants in humans and animals. It is a water-soluble, chain-breaking antioxidant that reacts directly with superoxide, hydroxyl radicals, and singlet oxygen. The antioxidant functions of vitamin C appear to
have clinical significance in providing protection from free radical damage to the eyes, lungs, blood and the immune system.

FUNCTIONS
Dietary calcium is an important determinant of healthy bone structure, as bone calcium is constantly turning over, moving through a continuous process of formation and resorption. UltraCAL provides this much needed dietary calcium in the highly absorbable forms of calcium microcrystalline hydroxyapatite and calcium carbonate/citrate/chelate complex. Vitamin D is a key regulatory hormone for calcium and bone metabolism. Adequate status, and its intake and/or production are essential not only for normal calcium absorption from the diet, but also for proper maintenance of plasma calcium levels. Although magnesium comprises only about one percent of bone mineral content, it still significantly affects both bone mineral metabolism and the matrix that provides its structure. Adequate dietary magnesium maintains optimum bone function and structure. Osteo-guard Plus Ipriflavone also provides phosphorus (as microcrystalline hydroxyapatite), trace minerals, bone matrix proteins, amino acids, and glycosaminoglycans in their natural forms and physiological ratios.
FUNCTIONS
Numerous studies of postmenopausal women and individuals whose bones are showing signs of demineralization have investigated the benefits of Ipriflavone on bone health. Laboratory and clinical studies have documented ipriflavone’s positive effect on bone density. Experts agree that ipriflavone appears to directly inhibit osteoclast activity, thereby decreasing bone resorption. Osteoclasts and osteoblasts are the two primary types of bone cells. Osteoblasts, the more exterior cells, are responsible for bone mineralization. Osteoclasts, found beneath the osteoblasts, are responsible for bone resorption. When calcium levels in the blood drop, the osteoblasts change shape, allowing the osteoclasts to become exposed and release calcium from the bones to the rest of the body. Scientists suspect ipriflavone may also stimulate osteoblast activity. As osteoblasts are responsible for laying down new bone, an increase in osteoblast activity would result in increased bone mineralization. Osteoporosis affects a large proportion of postmenopausal women and the elderly in developed countries. For some women, exogenous hormones provide some continued protection against accelerated, progressive, postmenopausal bone loss. Currently, there are few effective options for those women who are unable to, or choose not to take hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It is generally accepted that obtaining enough dietary calcium throughout life can significantly decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis. Among other factors, such as regular exercise, gender and race, calcium supplementation during childhood and adolescence appears to be a prerequisite for maintaining adequate bone density later in life. But even elderly, osteoporotic patients can benefit significantly from supplementation with dietary calcium. Ipriflavone, together with adequate calcium, vitamin D, and other key nutrients in bone health, offers non-estrogenic protection against excessive bone resorption. Unlike other well-known isoflavones, such as genistein found in soy foods, ipriflavone does not have estrogenic activity. Ipriflavone can be safely used in conjunction with natural phytoestrogens or with HRT. Magnesium plays an essential role in a wide range of funda-mental cellular reactions. More than 300 enzymes require magnesium as a cofactor. Complexed with ATP, the main carrier of metabolic energy in the body, magnesium is essential for all biosynthetic processes, glycolysis, formation of c-AMP, energy-dependent membrane transport, trans-mission of genetic code for protein synthesis, and muscle function.
Of the 20-30 grams of total body magnesium, about 40% is located in muscle and other soft tissues, and the remainder in bone. The concentration of intracellular magnesium is carefully regulated, and its alterations can have profound effects on cardiac and skeletal muscle physiology.

For example, low plasma levels of tyrosine, as can result from the use of oral contraceptive drugs, cause lower norepinephrine synthesis which is associated with mood changes and other neurological signs.
Tyrosine is also a precursor of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine and thyroxine. In the thyroid gland, these hormones are synthesized from a precursor protein called thyroglobulin, which is a large protein rich in tyrosine residues that are reacted with iodine. Lipoic acid is a nutritional coenzyme that participates in the energy metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, with a particular role in blood glucose disposal. It is also able to scavenge a number of free radicals.
As both a fat and water-soluble, sulfur-containing coenzyme, lipoic acid functions in the body as part of several multi-enzyme complexes located in the mitochondria. Lipoic acid is essential for metabolizing carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, for the conversion of their energy into ATP. Two of these enzyme complexes, pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (KGDH) are part of the citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle), and as such assume a central role for general energy production. Another lipoic acid containing enzyme complex, branched-chain keto-acid dehydrogenase (BCKADH), is involved in deriving energy from the branched chain amino acids, leucine, isoleucine, and valine. A related metabolic function of lipoic acid is its role in blood glucose disposal. This important coenzyme appears to be necessary for the normal transport of blood glucose into the cell. This may be explained by its functions in the glucose-metabolizing enzymes, PDH and alpha-KGDH, but some researchers suspect a more direct role in cellular glucose uptake at the cell membrane. As early as 1959, lipoic acid was suggested to be an antioxidant, since it could extend the actions of vitamin C in guinea pigs, and those of vitamin E in rats. It is only recently, however, that the specific actions of lipoic acid in free radical quenching, metal chelation, and antioxidant regeneration have been investigated. Body cells and tissues are threatened continuously by damage caused by toxic free radicals and reactive oxygen species (e.g., peroxides) which are produced during normal oxygen metabolism, and by toxic agents in the environment. Free radicals, once formed, are capable of disrupting metabolic function and cell structure. When this occurs, additional free radicals are produced which, in turn, can result in more extensive damage to cellular structure and function. Lipoic acid is unique among biological antioxidants, because it is soluble in both water and lipids. This allows it to neutralize free radicals just about everywhere in the body, inside and outside the cells. Due to its unique sulfur-containing structure, lipoic acid can scavenge several types of free radicals, such as the highly reactive hydroxyl, and singlet oxygen free radicals. Body cells and tissues are threatened continuously by damage caused by toxic free radicals and reactive oxygen species (e.g., peroxides) which are produced during normal oxygen metabolism, by other chemical reactions, and by toxic agents in the environment. Free radicals, once formed, are capable of disrupting metabolic activity and cell structure. When this occurs, additional free radicals are produced which, in turn, can result in more extensive damage to cells and tissues, particularly the oxidation of DNA, proteins, and membrane lipids. The uncontrolled production of free radicals is thought to be a major contributing factor to many degenerative pathologies.
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a prime antioxidant enzyme found in two forms. One, complexed with zinc and copper, is localized in the cytosol, while the other, bound with manganese, is found in the mitochondrial matrix. Both forms of this metalloenzyme catalyze the inactivation of destructive reactive oxygen species by converting them to hydrogen peroxide which is then transformed to water and oxygen by the enzyme catalase. Like beta-carotene, lycopene is an efficient quencher of a chemically reactive species of oxygen called singlet oxygen. FUNCTIONS
Co-Enzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is an important rate-limiting cofactor in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, the biochemical pathway in cellular respiration from which adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the form of energy used by the body, is derived. Since cellular activities are dependent upon energy, co-enzyme Q10 is crucial for the efficient functioning of nearly every cell.
In addition to its well-established function as a component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, co- enzyme Q10 has in recent years acquired increasing attention regarding its antioxidant properties. Co- Enzyme Q10 occurs in all cellular membranes as well as in blood serum and in serum lipoproteins. As a lipid- soluble antioxidant, co-enzyme Q10 efficiently protects membrane phospholipids and serum low-density lipoproteins from lipid peroxidation. And, as recent data indicate, it also protects mitochondrial membrane proteins and DNA from free radical induced oxidative damage. These effects of co-enzyme Q10 are independent of those of other antioxidants, such as vitamin E; although co-enzyme Q10 can also extend the functions of vitamin E by regenerating
it from its oxidized form. Tissue co-enzyme Q10 levels are regulated through the mevalonate pathway, increasing with various forms of oxidative stress, and decreasing during aging. Related to its antioxidant properties, co-enzyme Q10 is important for normal immune function. This has been shown in a number of experimental and clinical studies.
Healthy people have the ability to synthesize adequate amounts of co-enzyme Q10. According to Dr. Karl Folkers and other researchers, humans can synthesize co-enzyme Q10 from the amino acids tyrosine or phenylalanine and mevalonic acid, all of which are abundant in the body. However, the synthesis is a complex process involving 15 separate steps which require many enzymes, nutritional mineral cofactors, and vitamin coenzymes.
As a result, the biosynthesis of co-enzyme Q10 in the human body requires a good diet – one that is high in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrient factors. Yet, it has been shown by NHANES I and II studies that many Americans do not consume an adequate diet. Rather, for many, dietary intake of water soluble vitamins, vitamin A, and some minerals and trace elements is insufficient. FUNCTIONS
Ubiquinol is the biologically reduced form of ubiquinone, also known as coenzyme Q10. Ubiquinone can be converted by the body into ubiquinol. While supplemental ubiquinone plays a valuable role in health and can be utilized by the body, recent studies indicate that as people age, the body’s ability to convert ubiquinone to ubiquinol begins to decline. Since this nutrient plays critical roles in antioxidant, energy and cardiovascular function, ubiquinol may be of special importance for older adults looking to support normal aging and cardiovascular function. Once the capsule opens, the contents can be easily mixed with the water, resulting in the formation of the association colloid. There is no separation of oil and water phases as is typical with more traditional delivery systems.

It reduces the production of unhealthy prostaglandins by modulating the arachidonate cascade. Its enzymatic activity may provide comfort associated with injuries. Silymarin is responsible for milk thistle’s powerful protective and regenerative activities in the liver. Present day chronic, low-grade stress results in the continual release of CRH (Corticotrophin Releasing Hormone) from the hypothalamus. This chronic secretion causes dysfunction in the HPA axis, desensitizing the hypothalamic and pituitary receptors to negative feedback from adrenaline, noradrenalin and particularly, cortisol. Loss of negative feedback within the neuro-hormonal system results in a multitude of health issues. When the negative feedback loop within the HPA-axis is disrupted, chronic hormonal secretion becomes “normal” for that individual. Vitamin C is the required coenzyme for two groups of enzymes that catalyze the cross-linking of collagen fibers – lysyl hydroxylases and prolyl hydroxylases. Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino sugar found in glycosoaminoglycans, integral components of the proteoglycans found in joint cartilage. Proteoglycans are large carbohydrate rich structures that provide resiliency, load distribution, shock-absorbing, compressive and lubricating properties to joints and connective tissues. The availability of glucosamine is an integral part of the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans that are necessary during the constant remodeling that aging cartilage undergoes. The cause of discomfort, especially in the joints, can be linked to the degradation of arachidonic acid to certain leukotrienes and prostaglandins via the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. Many of these eicosanoids are potential mediators of inflammation. Modern science has found that by inhibiting the enzymatic activity of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, the discomfort experienced with aging joints can be reduced. Resveratrol: The use of red wine for health has been well documented. Recent studies have demonstrated that resveratrol can modify normal inflammatory responses in human and animal cells by way of inhibition of the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. UC·IITM is a patented form of undenatured type II collagen. Collagen is a fibrous protein secreted by connective tissue and is the prime structural component of skin, bones and joints. It represents close to 25% of all the body’s protein. Although about 15 types of collagen have been found in various parts of the body, the fibrillar type II collagen is distributed primarily in articular cartilage, i.e. cartilage associated with joints. UC·IITM is from cartilage that has been sterilized without substantially altering its chemical or molecular structure. Studies have shown that oral administration of native, i.e. undenatured, type II collagen helps support joint health, by a mechanism known as oral tolerance. FUNCTIONS
Oral supplements of live, beneficial intestinal micro-organisms for nutritional health and well-being are known as probiotics. Probiotic dietary lactobacilli colonize the intestinal tract, depending on the specific bacterium-to- host affinity. Bacteria are continually in competition for colonization space. The original bacterial colonies have an advantage over transient bacteria. Nevertheless, the composition of the intestinal microflora is dynamic and constantly changing.
If harmful microorganisms proliferate, the equilibrium is disturbed, and it becomes difficult even for indigenous bacteria to maintain their necessary territory to colonize the intestine. Antibiotics tend to kill off both beneficial and harmful bacteria, and thus may also disturb the normal, healthy balance of intestinal microorganisms. Specifically, tea has been used for hundreds of years by many cultures throughout the world for its health promoting properties and has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant. While many people are familiar with green and black tea, white tea is less well known. Although white tea is derived from the same plant from which green and black tea are made (Camellia sinensis), white tea is considered to be a more rare and unique product. The term “white” is derived from the high proportion of silvery buds on the plant at the time of harvesting, which tend to impart a white tint to the tea. Green tea is often promoted for the fact that is it minimally processed; however, white tea is the least processed of all the teas, and is rapidly steamed and dried after picking. This lack of processing results in a higher concentration of polyphenols, and consequently, greater antioxidant activity. The apple, pomegranate and blueberry extracts present in FruiTEA-MaxTM also contribute significant antioxidant activity to this formulation. In fact, pomegranate juice has been shown to contain almost three times the total antioxidant ability compared with similar amounts of green tea or red wine.
Measuring Antioxidant Activity – The Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity
The oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay is a method for quantifying the antioxidant strength of substance (i.e. its ability to fight free radicals). The method was developed in part at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. The measurement involves combining the sample to be tested (the antioxidant) with a fluorescent compound as well as a compound that generates free radicals at a known rate. As free radicals are generated, the fluorescent compound is damaged and subsequently loses its fluorescence. When the antioxidant is present, it absorbs the free radicals being produced and therefore inhibits the loss of fluorescence by the fluorescent compound. The stronger the antioxidant is, the more the loss of fluorescence will be inhibited. The measurement is standardized against a water-soluble vitamin E derivative (called Trolox) which has a known ORAC value, and is reported in terms of Trolox equivalents (μmole TE). This method serves as an excellent way to quantify the ability of various compounds to quench free radicals. ORAC values have been measured for many fruits and vegetables as well as numerous plant extracts. For example, a single serving (1/2 cup) of fruits and vegetables yields an ORAC value between 600 – 800 μmoleTE. Based on the recommendation that we should be consuming five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day, one can tell that the ORAC value of a healthful diet would be quite high.
ORAC value is measured on every lot of FruiTEA-Max, and is typically around 7,000 μmoleTE per serving which is the ORAC equivalent of 8 – 11 servings of fruits and vegetables.
